Words of Encouragement from CCDC Founder & Artistic Director-Willy TSAO

Happy 20th anniversary, Dua Space Dance Theatre! City Contemporary Dance Company (CCDC) is thrilled to be here to say congratulations in person and performing together with you in Amidst the Wind at the national theatre Istana Budaya from Sep 8 to 9.

Over the years, I had the great fortune of meeting dancers from Malaysia who came to Hong Kong to chase their dance dream. Each of them was very professional, talented and dedicated to their art. Many even danced for CCDC, sharing their passion for creativity and performance, helping to develop contemporary dance in Hong Kong and becoming a vital force in Hong Kong’s dance history. One such representative is Yap Choong Boon. He left Hong Kong and returned to Malaysia in 1998 and, with Anthony Meh, founded Dua Space Dance Theatre – the country’s first full-time contemporary dance company. Together they created, nurtured and expanded Malaysia’s own contemporary dance world. These 20 years couldn’t have been easy.

Amidst the Wind was first created to celebrate the 20th Anniversary of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, handpicking 10 excerpts from almost 100 original CCDC productions between 1997 and 2017 to mark the 20 years since the handover of Hong Kong to China. This mixed bill of 90 minutes included works by Helen Lai, Dominic Wong, Sang Jijia, Noel Pong and myself, and the variety of style and spirit is a demonstration of the diversity of Hong Kong culture.

For the performances here in Malaysia, the original CCDC edition is reconfigured to embrace highlights and milestones from Dua Space over the past two decades. This production not only shows importance chapters from two leading contemporary dance troupes in Asia, it is also a testament to how dance reaches beyond its own cultural region. Amidst the Wind is an equal dialogue, it records how artists express and respect individuality, pursue innovation and reflect on the times in two different places. It is a review of how Dua Space and CCDC have grown amidst wind and rain over the past 20 years, and a wish that dancers will continue to breeze through any storm with confidence in the next 20 years!
